Northeastern officials announced yesterday the decision to terminate school's intercollegiate football program, according to a press release from the university.

According to the release, the decision was made by a panel consisting of senior administrators, trustees, faculty, alumni, donors and students. The Athletics Review Panel has met since 2007 to discuss the direction of the Athletic Department. Peter Roby, director of athletics and recreation, headed this panel and made the initial recommendation to discontinue football, which the panel accepted.

In the release, Roby said the benchmark for defining a program’s success is not wins and losses, but creating a positive student-athlete experience.

“The primary motivation for this decision was based on the significant obstacles to providing this experience for our football players,” Roby said in the press release.

The release addressed the financial burdens of continuing to field a team, in part by saying that “elevating and sustaining a competitive Division 1 football program would require additional multimillion dollar investments on an ongoing basis.”

Mike Armini, vice president for marketing and communications, told The News a press conference to discuss the matter in detail will be held Monday morning at Matthews Arena at 11 a.m.

In an interview with The News from October 2007, Roby said cutting an athletic program was “a possibility,” citing the mandate from President Joseph Aoun for each department "to try and be distinctive and excellent."

According to the release, the decision follows the university’s attempt to “prioritize programs and invest in signature strengths.”

The decision to drop football comes less than a year after the Friends of Northeastern Athletics group wrote in a newsletter that football would not be dropped. In a Dec. 21, 2008 newsletter, the group wrote it met with Roby about future plans for the university's athletics programs. According to the newsletter, Roby reportedly remarked that there was no reason Northeastern football would not exist for the next four years.

The football team had not had a winning season since 2003. It completed its 74th season of play Saturday with a 33-27 victory at Rhode Island, finishing up the 2009 season with a record of 3-8, 3-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Armini said members of the football team who had been receiving an athletic scholarship will still continue to receive their scholarship until their graduation. As an NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) school, Northeastern's football team received 63 scholarships a year.

The departure of the football program leaves the school with 18 intercollegiate sports, in addition to club and intramural sports.

According to the Wall Street Journal: "After 289 wins in 74 seasons, Northeastern University has shuttered its football team. The team, which went 3-8 this season, actually made $25,000 in the latest fiscal year, but Mike Armini, vice president of marketing and communications, says the Boston school agreed it would have to spend substantially more than its current $3.8 million in expenses to improve."
So, the team actually made the school money, and it still got canceled?

Happy Asks: "What would be the point of spending all that money for a program that generates no revenues?" Generally, when I pay for something, there's a certain expectation. A reasonable expectation would be: if I pay, each semester, each year, for a on-campus stadium, the school should build that stadium. Now, I don't know about you, but I find it very difficult to imagine that they'd build a stadium, without a football team. The whole parking point you raise is a non-issue, since the two parking garages near the lot are never full anyway, and parking could easily be provided below the stadium. As for complaining about pride, well, sorry, its hard to feel lots of pride when your school has to shuttle you across town in a yellow school bus, like we were in middle school. Not the proudest of moments, in my opinion.

my heart goes out to these kids. I wish they could have had the same experience that I did as an NU football player. I was fortunate enough to graduate from a great school, win a conference title, play in the 1 aa playoffs and now have a great job that I love doing. I owe alot of my success to my experience at Northeastern. Its really sad that all we worked for as a program was destroyed by one man. Rocky Hager. He should have been fired 4 years ago.

"Football could not excel without the creation of an on-campus stadium, which is something that Northeastern never really focused on despite students contributing funding to it since 2004."

I'm sorry but I am getting really tired of the "they didn't play on campus so no one could go and they sucked." It is total BS. Regardless of where they played, the team was poorly run and couldn't produce results. The whole on-campus stadium idea was fruitless. What would be the point of spending all that money for a program that generates no revenues? Northeastern is a city school and, as such, zoning and space is limited and you can't always get what you want. It's not so easy to just spring up a stadium in the middle of Roxbury. Not to mention the fact that one idea was to level the parking garages to make room. Try telling some of our world class faculty that they have to shell out more for the commuter rail or park at another location because we want our football team to be a little closer -- let's see how that one would go over! If the football team were winning ever game and/or the school generally showed an ounce of pride for the team it would be worth it but since neither scenario is correct, it was not worth it and as such, the program never came into fruition so deal with it.

It sucks that they had to do this but, let's face it, this was totally warranted! The football team was nothing but wasted resources at this point. All this money was going into staffing, field maintenance, player tuition, and other administrative costs and for what?? As a sophomore at this school, I can attest that pretty much no one I know goes to the football games. Many NU students have simply ignored the team, especially this season. Why should the school continue to fund the program when it is bringing in no revenues whatsoever and merely garnering a poor reputation? I'd rather have no team than a laughing stock of a team. This season was extremely poor as have been the previous ones. The team had their shot and things just did not work out in the end. Lately the idea that our tutition money and fees having been going into this program has become increasingly sickening. It's not fair to all the students who come to NU to have to foot the bill for such a poor program. For all of you who think this is going to detract incoming students, I think you are seriously mistaken. How many kids are honestly going to say "Ohh NU doesn't have a football team. Guess I'm not going there!" Get real -- I really don't think this will have a detrimental effect on the university and I think it was ultimately the right decision on behalf of the administration. Personally, I'd rather just light my funds on fire than throw them into such a results-less program. Don't get me wrong - there are plenty of other instances of this at NU but for now this is one less bill to foot!

The fact is this: Northeastern students since at least 2004 have been paying into a stadium. SGA President Fox blogged that this "on-campus multi-purpose athletic facility" was never for one sport or purpose. That is true. But, football was expected to be a big beneficiary of having a stadium on-campus. Northeastern has failed to make the stadium a priority, and now without a football team to play in a stadium, it hurts the case for still building one.

So when alumni like Mr. Brielman say they feel cheated, I agree. We've seen very little, if any, progress towards a stadium the last 5 years, yet we've been paying in each year towards it.

Kevin are you serious? they earned a full scholarship to Northeastern and are being forced to transfer based on the school dropping the program. They didnt ask for the school to drop the program. I'm sure alot of these kids could have went other places but chose to come here becuase of the school and the sport. Getting an athletic scholarship is no different than an academic one.

I'm having a hard time feeling bad for a bunch of young individuals who's main accomplishments for receiving tuition relief were athletic related. I know kids who were very good students who were forced to transfer out because they could no longer afford the tuition. You still go to a top 100 school for cheap. If you want to play football so bad then go somewhere else, you will not be missed.

This was not Roby's decision....he is the fall guy ( a good soldier) for the Leadership...How can NEU go from talking about BUILDING a stadium a few years ago to now dropping the PROGRAM.
What a disaster and Joke, why not save the money, and stop building out the executive offices, how much was the build out of the 6th floor of CP or the redo of Churchill....invest in students programs not the executive office space!!!
These student athletes deserve better!!!!!

I feel badly for these kids. They have busted their butts day in and day out and have been abandoned by the administration. The administration has been talking about building a new stadium since I was a student. In the meantime Matthews Arena has been renovated multiple times. It is clear where the administration's priorities are. Is this the best financial decision at this point in time? - yes. Do I blame President Aoun or AD Robey? - no. They were handed this mess. It is clear that there was never a serious plan to build a new stadium. This is the end result of years of inaction and neglect of the football program by the University Administration. As an alum I am embarrassed. More so I feel horribly for the players. Absolutely disgraceful.

As an alumni of Northeastern it is an embarrassment that they have decided to cut the football program. Football is an easy target at NU because of its record and lack of attendance, but with the proper funding we could have an excellent program that could attract top talent and coaching staff. Put your money where your mouth was a few years ago when you were discussing options of a new stadium off Columbus. A state of the art stadium which is actually accessible by the student body would have been well spent money. A school of this size deserves a good football program and the NU athletic department should be ashamed. My donations will be going elsewhere this year because clearly NU does not know how to properly spend their dollars.

Everybody talks about the attendance. Attendance has zero effect on the funding of the program. What do you think that $250 "Athletic sports fee" every student gets charged with every semester is for? It doesnt matter if you goto the game or not everything is already paid for! Putting 5,000 students in the stands isnt going to increase revenue they already bought tickets.

I spend 2 years on the track team at Northeastern and it was so discouraging when some of the top high school athletes wanted to come to NU to compete but we only had 2 scholorships. It is about time. I don't Roby could have said it better in his letter.

I remember my first NU football game, mainly because it was Boston University's last football game.

Anyway, what I would like to know is what the University is going to do with all the money we've been paying for an on-campus stadium. Will they still build one? Hmmm? That is my only question. Whats the point in charging us a specific fee to pay for a stadium, and then cutting the team that would be the primary occupants?

I'm feeling just a little... cheated.

anony: I agree not a good representation when you cant spell football. Nu football was #1 going into the 2003 season in street and smith magazine so whoever wrote that is somewhat right. nobody went to those games when we were good for a 2 year stretch either. Its my understanding that the NU administration looked at the numbers from BU at Nickserson field when they had football and decided an on campus stadium in Boston doesnt gaurantee people will show up. Once they decided to not have an on campus stadium it was only a matter of time for the football program. in my opinion.

While I do feel badly for the players, this is probably an overall good decision for the university.
My only fear is that this money will be wasted. Put the money saved into financing undergrad scholarships.
