Hofstra cuts football, relocates funds to academics

Northeastern opponent Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., announced it would eliminate its football team in a press release Thursday, a week and a half after Northeastern cut its own football program.

Unlike Northeastern, Hofstra has publicly announced where it will reallocate the funding for the football program.

The program reportedly cost $4.5 million – money which will now go toward faculty, academic programs and scholarships, according to the press release. The football team finished its season 5-6.

A Dec. 3 article in the Boston Globe reported there was a "low level of interest" in the Hofstra team. The article reported the average attendance was 4,260 in a 13,000-seat stadium.

Northeastern's football team cost $3.8 million out of a $20.3 million athletics budget and the team finished the season 3-8. The average home game turnout was 1,596.
