Saturday Springfest concert officially began at 7 p.m. when DJ Diplo’s techno beats channeled through the amps and vibrated the floor of a half-full, neon-lit Matthews Arena.
After months of planning, the Council for University Programs’ (CUP) annual end-of-Springfest bash drew in a line of people that stretched down the block. They steadily filed in through metal detectors to fill the arena by the time Guster took the stage at 7:25 p.m. After their set, Philadelphia-based Diplo spun mash-ups of popular songs before Jimmy Eat World ended the show.
“There wasn’t a favorite part for me – the whole night was perfect,” said Nani Stoick, Springfest concert chair. “We didn’t have any [bad] situations at all.”
Guster, who hasn’t been on tour in a year and a half, played a medley of songs from their 2006 album, Ganging Up on the Sun, with a few of their most well-known hits from previous albums. Their set began with “One Man Wrecking Machine” and moved on to popular songs “What You Wish For” and “Satellite.”
Before playing “Hang On,” lead singer Adam Gardner told listeners:  “This is where you take out your Zippo lighters – or your iPhone applications of Zippo lighters.”
The dialogue during Guster’s performance included a brief update about their new album and the status of band members’ babies; an announcement of one of their stage crew member’s decision to leave the music business, to which they followed up with a candle-lit cake; and an FYI to the audience that their drummer, Brian Rosenworcel, plays sans sticks, which Gardner described as “intense.”
Their set finished with a thank you and arguably their most popular song, “Fa Fa.”
Diplo’s set after Guster’s performance, some concertgoers said, was better than his first, with dance mixes of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” and Lil Wayne’s “A Milli.” His first set was a series of computer-produced techno sounds.

Sophomore international affairs major Al Smith said she wished DJ Diplo had more time to spin his tunes.

“If he had had his own time period, people would have paid more attention,” she said. “He’s a real artist.”

She also said the seating arrangement for the show was “strange,” and not conducive to the appropriate response to Diplo’s music. The floor was filled with folding chairs rather than left an open space to allow concertgoers to dance.

Jimmy Eat World started their set around 9:10 p.m. with “Futures” from the 2004 album of the same name. They moved on to songs like “Dizzy” and “Blister” and went off stage briefly after playing “Pain.” For their encore, they played the well-known hits “Hear You Me,” “The Middle” and “Sweetness.” During the show, lead singer Jim Adkins alerted the audience that their new album, a live-recording of their previous album Clarity drops tomorrow.

“Jimmy Eat World completely rocked the entire arena,” Stoick said. “People loved it.”

Freshman undecided major Lindsay Broderick said she was pleased with the show overall.

“I thought it was pretty good,” she said. “I liked when Jimmy Eat World came back on for an encore.”

Stoick said this year’s concert went smoother than in previous years, like when Nas and Ludacris performed.

“It was amazing,” Stoick said. “The bands were really down to earth. Backstage, it was the smoothest Springfest we’ve had.”

NU students..., my apologies. I should have added that it actually never sold out in the first place in addition to what I said in my 1st post about people jumping ship on the facebook group. God only knows why they bought the tix in the first place, unless they were thinking about trying to make a profit (LMAO!) My bad.
But still...CUP...how about showing the metal heads some love...Unearth was @ AfterHours awhile back (2007?) and they pretty much could have owned this weak set you got for Springfest...at least have a musically balanced concert next time so that you can show you made the attempt to appeal to everyone, no matter their musical tastes...if not, then turn over the concert decisions to someone who will, or stop wasting our money.

Exactly. The issue isn't whether or not Springfest sucked or that people bought tickets who didn't like the bands, it's that the News wrote this ridiculous piece that does not accurate report on what happened at all.
Hated Springfest ad so did everyone else

What's funny is that I love Guster, and sure I could enjoy Jimmy Eat World. My issue with this article is that if you were there, you KNOW the mass exodus of people running for their lives from Matthews, and to not mention that at all, even if u wanted to say the concert was great (which im sure some people thought it was) u can NOT ignore everyone leaving. Itshould have at LEAST been mentioned. And getting a quote from the springfest concert chair? THAT'S an unbiased opinion (sarcasm).
CUP went bad

CUP as a whole this year completely sucked.

way to lose everything you guys got last year. Hopefully next year someone better will come along to rule the group.

It doesn't matter if you did or didn't like the concert...or maybe it does to you...the point of the matter is that the huntington news did a horrible job reporting. end of story.
NU students are lame

lmao: my point exactly. If you guys didn't want to go see the bands, why did you buy the tickets and thus have to be begging on facebook to give them away? It makes no sense.
And it doesn't matter who CUP brings in, someone is going to complain. We could have Paul McCartney here next year and there will be some NU faction upset with that choice. If you don't like it, don't go.
Whats with all the hatred of Guster
Tue Apr 7 2009 13:06
Seriously why would you go to this concert if you don't even like the bands? and then complain about how horrible it was. Guster is awesome if you actually listened to them. It would have been a lot more fun for everyone if the people who didn't actually want to be there didn't show up to make room for the people that actually did want to be there
Get Real Music

I've been at NU for three years and for three years I've seen nothing but crap as the acts for Springfest. At least CUP was smart enough to not have someone from the rap/hip-hop genre this year but come on, Jimmy Eat World and Guster. Get some good acts. If that means joining Live Nation, get Matthews to do it.
Meh

Aww don't bash Guster, their music is really good but not letting us crowd around the front just ruins the whole point of a concert. As for Jimmy Eat World, they weren't engaging at all.

Seriously, this concert was a huge bore. Does CUP pay off the Huntington News? It seems like SGA and RSA can only get bad press but CUP is like Northeastern's student group poster child. They're the worst one out there. This concert proves it. Way to waste a ridiculous amount of the student's money.
lmao

ROFL...why am I not surprised..."NU students"...the show wasn't sold out man, there were people practically begging to give their tickets away to this on the facebook group for it. I guess all those hard core Guster/ Jimmy Eat World fans were out of state. :D :D :D
I myself was walking past Matthews at around 9 or so, and people were coming out then...hahaha...you got what you paid a whopping 5 bucks for, and those were a couple hours of your life you can't get back.
CUP, seriously. You say you're going to "wow people" with the concert line up you come up with, at least make it a good thing instead of causing the majority of students to do facepalms.
NU students are lame

What is really ridiculous is that uninterested Northeastern students even bothered to show up. If you don't like Guster or Jimmy Eat World, then why did you go? Why were there people standing five rows from the front with their arms crossed not interested at all? If you don't like the music, then don't come! Maybe more Jimmy Eat World or Guster fans could have gotten in instead of some yuppie 20-year-olds who are only interested in facebook and myspace. Pathetic.
this is ridiculous

Why does this article not mention the mass exodus of people leaving the arena throughout the show? From where I was seated in the lower bowl I saw so many individuals leaving throughout the show, mainly during Jimmy Eat World. The acoustics were off, the seating plan was too rigid for a rock concert, and Guster almost put me to sleep. I admit that both bands did their best to keep the energy level high and appeared to be giving it their all. However, I think a lot of people came to Springfest because it was cheap and...well Springfest. Those who didn't know Jimmy Eats World's music well had no qualms leaving early, and they did. To say that they "completely rock the entire arena" is a gross overstatement, seeing as though the entire arena wasn't even full to begin with and quickly dwindled in numbers as the set went on. Come on Northeastern News, try getting sources other than the Springfest Concert Chair!
Hated Springfest, and so did everyone else

I really thought that when the Huntington News went independent, it would start reporting things honestly. I would expect this kind of fluffy piece from the Voice, but not from our independent publication. From this article, I doubt the reporter was even at the Springfest concert. Anyone who was knows that the arena was not even close to full capacity, and most people left the show before Jimmy Eat World ever went on. Maybe Guster was more cooperative than Ludacris or Nas, but at least they drew a crowd and got people moving. I almost fell asleep during Guster's set. And obviously the 2/3 of Matthews Arena that left before the show's end agree.
