Junior goaltender Brad Thiessen has signed a professional contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Hobey Baker finalist said in a phone interview with The News Friday.

Thiessen said he began thinking about going pro after the men's hockey team's season ended last Saturday with a defeat to Cornell in the NCAA Tournament.

"I kind of put things on the backburner until after the season was over," he said. "There was some talk during the season, but I didn't really want it to distract from me and the team, what we were doing as a team, so that's where my focus was and once the last game was over I started thinking about my options and it went from there."

Thiessen will be joined in the Pittsburgh organization by teammate senior Joe Vitale, who was a 2005 draft pick of the Penguins. The outgoing captain signed with the team Thursday, according to a Northeastern Athletics press release.

Thiessen said he would report to Wilkes-Barre Scranton, the Penguins' American Hockey League affiliate, tomorrow.

He plans to practice with the team and get acquainted with the organization, but does not expect to participate in any live games with the team as the season winds down and the playoffs begin.

Thiessen said there were five or six NHL clubs that expressed interest in him, and that two or three seemed "very serious." He said it was nice to have a familiar face with him in Vitale with the Penguins, but that it wasn't the only factor that led him to Pittsburgh.

"It was more the opportunity that Pittsburgh presents for me as a goalie and the organization there, and they really wanted me so that's a good feeling," he said.

Thiessen also wanted to stress how gratious he felt to the Northeastern fan base for their support of the team this season, and how much he enjoyed his time with the Huskies.

"This place has meant an awful lot to me the last three years and I've got nothing but good memories from this season," he said. "The whole student body rallied around the team and it was a lot of fun to be a part of."

He also said he would like to finish his degree sometime in the future. Pick up Monday's edition of The Huntington News for a full story.

Good for Thiessen. It may suck right now but this will be good for the program. If Brad has success in the NHL it can be somethinig Cronin can talk about with recruits and show. As the hockey team improves expect to see more and more players leaving early to the NHL. I would not be surprised to see Qualier leave early if he has great seasons next year and the year after. The new goalie coming in is from the same league Thiessen played in (BCHL) and has similar numbers to what Thiessen had there. He is also 6'5. I am not saying he is going to be as good as Brad would be next year but I don't think it will be a disaster.

Hurley, I see your point man, but hear me out:
The NHL would have been waiting on him anyways after he graduated if he'd chosen to stay. One more year of (I'm assuming here, don't know his financial aid situation as I'm not privy to that info) free school because of a scholarship or two, and he would have been golden. Yes, the money's right there for him now (or soon will be), which is fine, but...he's not going to have that degree backing him up if something goes wrong (not saying it will, just hypothetically).
MHO here, but I wouldn't want my last game in college to be a loss in the first round of the tournament. I'd want to go back and kick some ass, maybe get a little revenge against BU and Cornell along the way, if possible, but that's just me...

Dude, Mosi Tatupu was in one of my Communications classes in, like, 1993. Ex-Partriot, ex-USC Trojan, parent of current NFLer Lofa, (who attended one class with dad) Mosi Tatupu. College completion can wait. Make your money & pursue your dreamns while you have the talent. And good luck.

100% agree with this decision. I would love to see him stay here at NU, but there are bigger and better things out there. Who knows whats going to happen a year from now...you can always go back to finish your degree. The ultimate goal as a hockey player is to get into the nhl. congratulations thiessen.
Just one more year?

Yes, "devils advocate" is correct. We all know Thiessen is an amazing goalie and the one holding the team together. With the momentum that has been growing over the past couple years, it seems downright low to just leave us hanging when we would have had, I'm assuming, an even better season come fall. I highly doubt he would be less sought after a year from now so the decision to leave is beyond me.
Even a bu guy stuck it out for his team, couldn't Thiessen do the same for NU?

I agree that it'd be awesome if he'd stayed, but Brad if you read this I wish you all the best. Thanks for the last couple of years, and I'll be rooting for you and Joe as long as you're playing hockey. Yes, you could have lead us to some serious hardware next year, but I don't blame you for taking the chance at the pros now. You know your situation better than any of us. Good luck in the future, and I hope to see you back on campus cheering on the team at some point

what is the chance of thiessen finishing his one year after joining the NHL... i'll have to say slim to none.
i do agree with 'devils advocate' though... thiessen, you really couldn't wait one more year to go pro? or at least finish up this semester?

Interesting that he's choosing to bail and not attempt to lead his team (and it would be his team next year if he had decided to stay, you all know that) to a berth in the NCAA championship next year, thereby raising his worth even more in next year's draft. Thiessen, you're good and all, but...come on man. You would like to finish your degree "sometime in the future?" You could have stayed, gotten a little more experience under your belt (and probably another Hobey Baker nomination), gotten your degree out of the way...but ok...thank you for feeling gracious to us fans, but...I'm not really feeling it at the moment.
