For 82 years, the Northeastern News has contributed to the university in ways beyond helping students prepare for careers in journalism, advertising and business. It has served as a source of information for our community and as a chance for its members to voice their views and concerns.

As part of its evolution, your college newspaper is in the process of making some exciting changes. In September, it will change its name and relocate its offices from the second floor of the Curry Student Center into leased space on Huntington Avenue, near Boston House of Pizza and Symphony Market.

The paper will soon be known as the Huntington News, and it will be published by a nonprofit corporation, called World Series Way Publishing Company. The newspaper will be overseen by student editors who will work alongside Northeastern alumni in maintaining a high standard of quality students have come to expect.

Making the leap from a campus activity to an independent publication is a major institutional change for the paper, but it is also the next logical step in a process that began more than a year ago, when The News announced it would begin printing twice-weekly during the academic year.

While the change in schedule was made to strengthen the paper's content and open the door for fresher, more community-driven reporting, this latest move allows your college newspaper a greater responsibility and accountability for every aspect of the operation.

Now, more than ever before, students will accept the credit and assume the blame that ultimately comes with their work at The News.

Accomplishing this next step will be a credit to the legacy that Northeastern has developed in fostering an experiential education for its students. Producing a student newspaper remains one of the best experiences in journalism, advertising and business available in a college setting. As an independent corporation, The Huntington News will be a model for integrating classroom learning with real-world experience, central to the university's mission since 1898.

Besides the new name, you won't notice any major differences with your newspaper when the first issue is published in September. It will still be available at all the same spots on campus, and the coverage will still focus on the same topics relevant to Northeastern.

We hope you will take the opportunity to pick up the first copy of the Huntington News - the independent student newspaper of the Northeastern community.
