Student Government Association (SGA) senator Linda Sun was nominated and confirmed as SGA parliamentarian for the final weeks of the semester at Monday's SGA meeting, following Sunday's unexpected resignation of former parliamentarian Grant Oberg.
"This year's election period has been filled with controversy and chaos, but I would like to challenge these headlines so prominently displayed on the Northeastern News front page. We are not in shambles," Sun said. "This election process has not been perfect … but the show must go on."
Oberg sent an e-mail resignation to SGA President Joey Fiore, and later the rest of the executive board, following a tense Rules Committee meeting Sunday night. The meeting had been called to hear grievances against both candidates for the next SGA president, Rob Ranley and Dan Kamyck, as well as to extend the voting period.
In his resignation e-mail, Oberg wrote, "I can no longer reconcile my personal feelings with the actions of [the Rules Committee]."
Oberg could not be reached for comment.
Fiore used his customary address to the Senate at Monday's meeting to remind them that even with these sudden changes, SGA is not "in shambles."
"We've gotten more feedback, reached out more effectively, had more results on our surveys," he said.
He also solicited the senators to work harder to get students to vote.
"Maybe we didn't do the best job of advertising [the election] the first place. We didn't commit to the best campaign; I'll be the first to admit that. We screwed up. But it's not too late," he said. "What we're going to do right now is buckle down and finish the job and get out there and get these votes for the next week."
Fiore then nominated Sun to lead that effort as parliamentarian until she graduates next month.
"I will work with the Rules Committee and the Administration and Public Relations committee to formulate and execute a promotional plan as well as see out the rest of elections to the best of my ability," she said.

*raises hands* I'll chair it! I mean I've only been to two meetings all year and I think Joey has done a good job. But again, only two meetings so i guess that's not the best. (Continued…)

If Fiore himself does not even want to chair the Joint Senate, he can simply not show up and then someone else will assume the chair.
