Letter to the Editor: 'Disgusting fatties' must make healthy changes

In response to "Keeping up appearances," in Monday's issue of The News, instead of condemning those who try to monitor their weight and enhance their physique, the article should have instead focused on the serious health risks posed to those who do not. People deemed overweight or obese are more likely in their lifetime to experience hypercholesteremia, Type-2 diabetes, stroke; the list is endless.

The article is right about one thing: diets fail.

At the same time, some people, like myself, do not diet at all, but rather have changed their eating lifestyle. I'll get wasted on a Friday night and drunkenly eat a 3,000 calorie meal right before passing out on occasion, but for the most part, education and training have allowed me to maintain overall healthy eating habits.

Our campus is filled with disgusting slobs who don't seem to care about themselves or their appearance. The worst thing that ever happened to America was the researcher who linked obesity to hereditary sources.

Wake up people! You are fat because you eat large portions of high calorie and low nourishment food and do not exercise enough. Genes may predispose some to weight gain but it is not absolute.

There is a very simple and widely accepted equation: intake calories minus expended calories equals weight loss or gain. It's pretty simple to tell which category you are in. Guys, look down, if your breasts are bigger than most women, put down the chips and get to the gym. Gals, look down, if you have a pouch of fat in between your belly button and your you-know-what, lay off the soft-serve and do some Pilates.

The lifestyle changes you make now will influence how you eat and exercise for the rest of your life.

Perhaps some of you who are reading this think I am being harsh; I don't care. As a future health professional I feel it is important not to dwell on the select few who become obsessive about their food intake, but rather put those who continue to practice poor eating habits and refuse to exercise in the spotlight.

- Joe Falinski is a junior pharmacy major.

So here I was sitting here reading this and I was thinking.. wow this sounds like Falinski wrote it. Sure enough, you did.

A joking aside.. you are completely correct. (Continued…)

Falinski- amazing piece. If you don't get a bitter retort from some cheeto-fingered subhuman pig-man (who undoubtably works for Residence Life, owns World of Warcraft & washes his bloated blubber pile with a rag on a stick), I'll be sorely disappointed. (Continued…)

Hoo boy, I cant wait to see how this one goes over. It is true that diets are detrimental to long term health. If anything you need to have a steady diet so you don't screw up your metabolism by changing the amount of calories you intake for long periods of time. (Continued…)

What a bitter cow!! Totally agree with the article. I hate it when people blame their "fat Ass" on genetics.

If your mother is overweight, do you call her a "disgusting slob" too? Way to judge.

I love how the title quotes him as saying "disgusting fatties" and yet his editorial places those two words nowhere near each other.

Great editing job right there guys. (Continued…)

Wow, I am not overweight, but I am extremely offended by this article. I can't believe the news even let this run. I think the writer of this article deserves to be ostracized, not the people he writes about. (Continued…)
