Northeastern is off to its most disappointing start in years after two rough losses left them with a 1-3 record yesterday.
The Huskies faced American and two-time defending National Champions Maryland this past weekend as part of the Terrapin Invitational at Maryland.Â
In the first game of the tournament, Northeastern suffered a 1-0 loss to American. With less than five seconds left in the scoreless game, the Eagles took advantage of a penalty corner, scoring the game-winning goal. Â
"The performance has been there but the outcome hasn't so far," said senior co-captain Liz Centofanti. "American capitalized on an opportunity and we didn't."Â
American, currently ranked No. 12 in the country with a 5-0 record heading into the game, had nine penalty corners, while the Huskies tallied one.Â
In the first game ever played between the two teams, American out-shot Northeastern 13-6, despite NU holding them to only four shots in the first half. This was the first time this season the Huskies have been out-shot by an opponent.Â
"We are going to focus on everything we've been successful at," said senior co-captain Ashley Webber.
Five Huskies tallied shots on goal, including two from standout senior forward Harriet Hoyer. Centofanti recorded seven saves in the loss.Â
The second game of the tournament didn't go any smoother for the Huskies, as Maryland shut them out in a decisive 6-0 victory Sunday afternoon. The Huskies held off Maryland for the first 20 minutes of play until sophomore midfielder Bri Davis netted the first goal for the Terrapins.Â
That was the spark for Maryland. In the remainder of the game, three players netted five more goals. Of the six total goals, half came from rebounds. The Terps out-shot the Huskies 28-2, and had eight penalty corners to NU's one.Â
Though the final score wasn't in the Huskies favor, Centofanti still tallied 16 saves,
"Our No. 1 goal is to win," Centofanti said. "That's what we want the outcome of each game to be. Putting the ball in the net is one thing we really need to work on."Â
The Huskies travel to Quinnipiac Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., and will play their home opener at Sweeney Field Saturday against Boston University at 1 p.m.
