Bostonians flock to the Esplanade every Independence Day for socializing, music and fireworks. The Boston Pops Orchestra performs its 78th Annual free concert at the Hatch Shell along the Charles River Wednesday. Guest artist John Mellencamp, known for hits "Jack and Diane," "Hurts So Good" and "Small Town," will lend his talent to the evening. The concert concludes with the orchestra's traditional performance of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture" as fireworks explode over the river.
