As temperatures rise, Northeastern students banish dark duds in favor of a brighter summer wardrobe.

For fall, trends revived a rocker-style, 80s vibe, while this summer, fashion will prove to channel an earlier decade.

Talia Fabrizio, a Northeastern alumna and manager at Jasmine Sola on Newbury Street, said the hottest trends for summer are sparkly, oversized and bright, with yellow, green and floral prints becoming popular.

Samantha Sang, a junior sociology major wearing, said she loves florescent hues.

"I'm from Puerto Rico, so I'm used to bright colors and everyone is into fashion, no one wears sweat pants there," she said.

For night-time style, Sang said she loves colors and sequins. This is another huge trend at Jasmine Sola, Fabrizio said.

"Definitely things that are embellished, whether it's like stones or gold beading or grommets, they're on all of our accessories right now; bracelets, tops, and headbands," Fabrizio said.

Erin Lewis, a sophomore communications major and a member of the sales team at Aldo, said that embellishments are fun, but not practical.

"I think they're cute if you're going out, but for every day, probably not," she said.

For bottoms, Fabrizio said an alternative to the popular skinny jean has emerged.

"The wide leg is definitely coming back; [designers] are picking up a lot of trends from the 70s," Fabrizio said.

But some students question if this is a practical look for a regular summer day.

Chelsey Bowman, a middler industrial engineering major, said summer style is more about simplicity.

"I'm more about the classics," she said.

Fabrizio said skinny jeans are still in style this season, in an array of colors.

"We still also have straighter leg, Audrey Hepburn-style jean, also in a lot of other colors like hot pink and blue," Fabrizio said.

But for Greta Aiken, a middler civil engineering major, this look is something that she would probably not be wearing this summer.

"I'm not a huge fan [of colored denim]," she said. "I was walking through the [Prudential] and saw a pair of green jeans. It's just not flattering."

Another trend Fabrizio noticed among Jasmine Sola's inventory was a look that she jokingly concluded as "pregnant is in."

"Everything is so oversized right now. Nothing we carry [at Jasmine Sola] right now is a tight fit; everything is flowy and layered," she said.

H&M is also in touch with this oversized-top trend.

"Silhouettes are looser with more volume, even the sharper tailored pieces," said H&M's head of design Margareta van den Bosch in a press release.

Van den Bosch also said in the press release that H&M's designs this season include looks for men that feature 50s sporty looks and tight-fitted blazers from the 70s.

Matt Kowalski, a junior business major and member of the Northeastern track team, said he was unaware that his athletic look was in style.

"I guess I pretty much go with whatever is comfortable," he said.

Designer Yohji Yamamoto and his collaborative line with Adidas, Y-3, featured this mix of sporty and fashion on the runway for this season.

While these trends are hitting the runway, Bowman said that some, like the wide-leg pants, won't be making a big impact on college campuses.

"It seems too trendy that I think it's more like, on the runway than what college kids are wearing," she said.

For my company I intensely study what college kids are into.
Mainly because the fashion world will eventually follow soon after . The main items I noticed are not what the NYC fashion industry is selling . (Continued…)

Hey Jane,

Maybe you should ask the NU News if you could write the next article for seasonal fashion! Clearly, your company hired the right girl. You have an obvious sense of what is hot right now, even OUTSIDE of fashion trends. (Continued…)

I think college kids are always leading the fashion edge. They constantly have to make the best of what they have instead of budget. There always be those that can afford anything, but totally lack originality. (Continued…)
